Our homemade Piccalilli is the most popular relish sold here in our bakery. We use it on roasted ham and mature cheddar sandwiches and it is delicious accompanying cold meats, sausages, hard cheeses and even gourmet hotdogs! It is also the vital ingredient for a Ploughman’s Lunch.
It’s history is grounded in colonial Anglo-Indian cuisine and it was originally known as ‘Indian Pickle’.
We make ours in the traditionally chunky way with lots of turmeric, mustard seeds, English mustard powder, cauliflower, apple cider vinegar and tiny pickling onions.
It has a taste variously described as pungent, head-clearing, tart, tangy, snappy and vinegary. Consequently, it stands up well to other strong-tasting foods.
